THE HOVAWART IS A VERY RARE OLD BREED THAT ORIGINATED IN GERMANY.
THE FIRST DOCUMENTED RECORDING WAS IN THE YEAR 1210.
IN THE 20TH CENTURY THEY BECAME NEARLY EXTINCT BECAUSE NEWER BREEDS SUCH AS THE GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG SLOWLY REPLACED THE HOVAWART. AROUND 1915 HOVAWART ENTHUSIASTS DECIDED TO TRY TO SAVE THE BRED, A BREEDING PROGRAM STARTED AND IN 1922 THE FIRST HOVAWART LITTER WAS REGISTERED WITH THE GERMAN BREEDING REGISTRY.
HOWEVER, AGAIN THE HOVAWART NEARLY PERISHED DURING THE GERMAN WAR EFFORT AND IN 1945 ONLY A FEW REMAINED.
